WHO | 2024 Report on health-enhancing physical activity in the European Union

WHO's 2024 report on health-enhancing physical activity (HEPA) showcases significant progress across EU Member States in promoting active lifestyles, while spotlighting areas for growth.

The 2024 WHO report on health-enhancing physical activity (HEPA) in the European Union highlights the progress made by EU Member States in promoting active lifestyles while identifying areas that require further effort. Over the past decade, significant advancements in national policies and practices aiming at encouraging physical activity have been reflected in adherence to the EU Physical Activity Guidelines, with compliance increasing from 64.7% in 2015 to 81.8% in 2024.

The report reveals that public awareness campaigns about the importance of physical activity are now a prominent feature in 89% of EU countries. These campaigns, which leverage platforms such as social media, public events, and mass media, play a crucial role in fostering healthier behaviors. Furthermore, 96% of Member States have integrated physical activity monitoring systems within their health sectors, enabling better surveillance and data-driven policymaking.

National strategies increasingly address the needs of specific populations, with 81% of countries implementing policies that cater to older adults, children, and disadvantaged groups. Cross-sector collaboration is also evident, with funding for HEPA initiatives coming from sectors like sports, education, health, and transportation in 93% of Member States.

The report underscores the importance of a collaborative, multisectoral approach in meeting global targets, including a 15% reduction in insufficient physical activity by 2030.

Physiotherapists play a crucial role in promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles and are central to achieving the progress documented in the report. The Europe Region of World Physiotherapy, through its advocacy, EU-funded projects and social media messaging, positions physiotherapy as an essential partner in the EU's journey towards meeting its 2030 physical activity targets.
