European Union | Funding Opportunities: Horizon Europe

The European Commission published the Horizon Europe Work Programme for 2026-2027 on 11 December 2025. With a total budget of €14 billion allocated across six research clusters, Cluster 1 (Health) offers particularly relevant opportunities for physiotherapy researchers and practitioners.

Recognition of Physical Therapy in Rehabilitation Research:

A notable development is the explicit recognition of physiotherapy within the call HORIZON-HLTH-2027-01-DISEASE-03: Long-term chronic conditions after post-viral or post-bacterial infections. This call specifically emphasises "effective rehabilitation approaches, including physical therapy" alongside cognitive interventions and psychological support for managing chronic non-communicable diseases, with particular attention to post-COVID conditions.

This explicit mention of physiotherapy and rehabilitation in the programme text represents an important acknowledgement of the profession's critical role in addressing long-term health challenges following infectious diseases.
